            EFB Division on Microbial Biotechnology

The EFB Division on Microbial Biotechnology was established by the General Assembly on 26 June 2020. Diethard Mattanovich (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria) and Paola Branduardi (University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy) were appointed as Founding Chair and Vice Chair. In the next few weeks, the European microbial biotechnology community will be invited to propose?topics and activities that?the Division should?address and promote. Expressions of interest to engage in the new Division are highly welcome and should be sent to [email protected] and [email protected].

We are delighted to remind readers that Early-bird Registration for the 5th EFB Microbial Stress Meeting is still open until July 25th. The abstract submission deadline has been extended to 1st August 2020.

The meeting will take place in Rome from 16-18th of November 2020. This year the programme includes internationally-known experts in the field giving talks on topics such as second messenger signalling in bacteria, stress sensing, stress and antibiotic resistance, biofilms, organic acid stress in yeasts, metal ion stress, yeast transcriptional response to stress amongst others. The meeting includes keynote lectures from Prof James Bardwell (University of Michigan, USA) on chaperone folding under stress conditions and from Prof Regine Hengge (Hermann von Helmholtz University, Berlin, Germany) on second messenger signalling.

This interdisciplinary meeting is an ideal forum to exchange ideas with leading scientists and form new collaborations. In the historic setting of Rome this promises to be a very enjoyable and stimulating meeting, so do not miss it!

New Biotechnology - Diverse human VH antibody fragments with bio-therapeutic properties from the Crescendo Mouse

Gene editing as a tool for sustainable food

The recently published Green Deal of the European Commission stated within the context of the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy that the EU needs to develop innovative ways to reduce dependency on pesticides and fertilizers, reverse biodiversity loss while at the same time provide society with sufficient, nutritious, sustainable and affordable food.

Tools required to achieve these targets will include innovative plant breeding technologies, especially precision breeding. This technology, also known as genome editing, allows scientists and breeders to develop desired crop varieties in a faster, relatively simple and much more directed way compared to previous breeding techniques.

Application of anammox within an integrated approach to sustainable food waste management and valorization

In this study, the anammox process was applied for the first time to the treatment of ammonium-rich liquid residues produced by the two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste (2sAD-FW); such residues may represent a significant environmental issue if not properly managed. The results suggest that anammox may be successfully integrated into a 2sAD-FW system, thus enhancing its environmental sustainability.

            CELL FACTORIES FOR INDUSTRIAL BIOPRODUCTION
Enhancing microbial strains and cell lines for industrial applications

Significant improvements have been done to understand and improve the selection/adaptation, rewire existing or construct new metabolic pathways to improve the properties of bacteria, yeast and mammalian cell lines used in industry. This two-day event gathering experts from industry and academia gives a unique “transdomain” opportunity to share experiences with the common goal of better selecting and improving robustness, yield, productivity and safety of various “cell factories” used for industrial bioproduction. An exhibition space will be provided as well as many opportunities for B to B meetings.
